[Longhorn Review] The Baroque and classical trumpet

Material Type: All, Music — Tags: , , , — Posted on November 4, 2009 at 10:46 am

By: Murray Hill Records

Apparently, Murray Hill records was a subsidiary of Random House, and mainly re-released excellent material. Other sources claim this boxed set was released in 1970. Gorgeously recorded. My pressing is quite good — I can not remark on the condition of those at this library. Interesting academic material in the liner notes.

Minstrel Show (sound recording)

Material Type: All, Music — Posted on December 19, 2008 at 9:27 am

By: Kuhn, Joseph

This is a magnificent selection including “Preacher and the Bear” and “Asleep in the Deep” Warren Biggs (Basso) was perhaps the finest bass singer in the history of this “Pre-Politically Correct” format. I’ve got an original copy (still) in good condition. Some of the jokes I still use — the best involved a Hair Restorer.

Hvarf / Heim

Material Type: All, Music — Tags: , , — Posted on November 17, 2008 at 3:35 pm

By: Sigur Rós

Beautiful, gorgeous and awe-inspiring. “Heim” is “home” in Icelandic and the film documents a number of (mostly) impromptu performances by Sigur Ros undertaken around the island.
This band is off in its’ own world. Clearly, not ‘rock’ music –but it still rocks at times –they have broken new territory and are doing something that is dangerously emotional and that is hard to put into words.

Astral Glamour

Material Type: All, Music — Tags: , , — Posted on October 2, 2008 at 11:26 am

By: The Homosexuals

Vampire Weekend was far from the first group to incorporate African influence into snotty white kid music, and Radiohead was certainly not the first to try to sell their music on their own.  The Homosexuals were a shifting group of punk rockers in the UK who set out to make avant garde music in a totally insular, outsider manner.  The result was they self-released a ton of projects on their own label It’s War Boys that ultimately sound like they may be the best DIY, kitchen-sink pop recordings ever. Collected on three CDs in this set are all of the recordings they issued as The Homosexuals.

Obsolete systems

Material Type: All, Music — Tags: , — Posted on September 2, 2008 at 11:31 am

By: Laurie Spiegel

“When it was new, each of these music systems, now long obsolete, was state of the art, visionary, radically new and so revolutionary that it required extended explanations in response to common questions such as ‘Why would anyone ever want to do that?’ ” -Laurie Spiegel

The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-revisited

By: Metallica

Allegedly recorded in a garage(natch)between albums and record companies, this collection of cover songs frigging rocks.

St. Giles Cripplegate

By: Jack Nitzsche

Here is Jack Nitzsche’s massive and beautiful orchestral work that brilliantly captures what’s compelling about the classical avant garde in the 20th century.

Most will recognize Nitzsche’s name for his work scoring films like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Performance” as well as arranging for Phil Spector, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, and pretty much everyone else too.

Finally we have a good selection of Sun Ra material.  This is one of my favorites.  Eloquent and odd jazz that’s deeply satisfying
