Amazon Kindle (First-Generation)

Kindle 1 and Kindle 2 Available with TIS

We also have a second-generation Kindle.

The Amazon Kindle revolutionized the e-reader industry.  With a capacity of over 200 titles, the light-weight first-generation Kindle can travel anywhere.  The e-ink screen allows perfect viewing in daylight conditions–no worrying about running down the battery to increase screen brightness!  The device itself can last weeks without running out of battery; if the wireless network is turned on (necessary to download and purchase new books), the battery lasts just under 48 hours.

The first-generation Kindle also includes The New Oxford American Dictionary with over 250,000 entries and definitions, so you can seamlessly look up the meanings of words without interrupting your reading as well as built-in access to the world’s most exhaustive and up-to-date encyclopedia—Wikipedia.

This device comes with a charging adapter.  To download books, you will have to associate an Amazon.com account with the device.  Before returning this device, we recommend disassociating your account; TIS is not responsible for charges to your account if someone else checks out the device and makes purchases with your login information.

Marine Science Library Web Site Redesign

The Marine Science Library web site has been redesigned and transfered into the Libraries Content Management System. The design draws on previous branch redesigns while adding design elements specific to the needs of MSL. Because the branch site was added to the Content Management System the content can be more easily managed and allows the web author access to the content without being concerned about effecting the theme and styling of the site.

Apple iPad

The Apple iPad revolutionized the tablet industry.  Released in January 2010, the iPad has already become one of the fastest-selling consumer products in history.  Like the Kindle, the iPad has a book reading application (iBooks), as well as the ability to play movies, television shows, and music.  Through the App Store, you can chose from thousands of apps to extend the functionality of the device.

This device requires an Apple ID to authenticate.  TIS does not provide a stock iTunes account; you will have to create one or use your own.  Any purchases made on this device will be under this account, so be sure to wipe the device before returning it!  TIS is not responsible for any purchases made by your account after you return the device.
