So many great library contests this week in honor of National Library Week and Research Week!

April 17 is National Haiku Poetry Day! Compose a haiku that celebrates libraries and/or research for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to the University Co-op.

Three ways to share your haiku with us and enter the contest:

1) Post it to our wall on Facebook

2) Post it to Twitter (either the whole poem if it fits or a link to it elsewhere) with the hashtag #utlibhaiku

3) Stop by the Libraries Fair on the PCL Plaza from 11:30-1:30 on Wednesday, April 17 and write it down at the haiku table along with your email address.

A winner will be chosen and notified on Monday, April 22.  By entering, you give us permission to share your entry on this blog and via Facebook and Twitter.

Need some help getting started?  To quote HaikuMaker.com, haiku is “an unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively.”

Here are some library-themed examples, composed by our Science Instruction Librarian, Roxanne Bogucka:

What excites desire
more than the Recent Books shelf
in a library?

Tempting New Books shelf—
destroyer of self-restraint,
wreck my willpower!

Scholarly shamus
and research findings flatfoot—
I, Librarian.

Good luck!

Win prizes and bragging rights as the Mayor of PCL on Foursquare!

UPDATE: Congratulations to our winner, Shannon W.!

Your mission should you choose to accept it: become the Mayor of PCL on Foursquare by 11:59pm on Sunday May 5.  You’ll win a Mayor t-shirt and other great prizes from Foursquare, the location-based social networking site.

The next time you’re at PCL, check in on Foursquare.  The person with the most check-ins during the last 60 days will ascend to Mayor of the location and will be our winner.

Only one check-in per day counts towards becoming Mayor, so there’s already competition for the title.  We watch the Mayor of PCL change frequently.  Start checking in ASAP!

Details on claiming the mayorship of a location can be reviewed here.

Not familiar with Foursquare? Check out this short video explaining how to use it.

Questions? Let us know in the comments.

Good luck!

Valentine’s Day Raffle Winners

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Valentine’s Day Raffle!  Over 400 people took the time to share what they loved about the Libraries both online and in our libraries.  Here are the five randomly-selected winning responses:

“I love the seats besides the window on the 4th floor [of PCL] – the sunshine and the calmness there.  I’m really shocked and a little moved by how many Chinese books are here.”

“I love the Classics Library because it is a friendly, quiet place to study and work and it is true to its name!  It will never go out of style!  Roses are red, the OCT section is blue, Classics Library, we’ll always love you!”

“The staff are incredibly helpful if you are having trouble looking for books or other resources. I never feel uncomfortable asking them questions. I also appreciate that there is a great selection of recently published books near the front entry of the PCL because I often find myself picking through there and discovering new books to put on my ‘to read’ list.”

“The request system – it’s really wonderful to be able to pick up books and CDs up at the library in RLM, where I spend all of my time anyway!”

“I love that I have a beautiful working space at the FAL.  The large windows overlooking trees help me to be calm and focused while doing my work.  Additionally, everything I need is right around me.  I have to access to reference materials, Mac computers, printers, etc., not to mention the staff who have always been so helpful.”

Wondering what other people said?  Check out this word cloud that represents frequently used words in responses to the question “What do you love about the Libraries?”

Tip Jar Post #23: Virtual Tours of the UT Science Libraries

Google Map of Libraries on the UT campus

View the interactive Tip Jar Library Tours in a larger map

There are tons of libraries around campus, but many of them are tucked away into smaller corners of departmental buildings or on the edges of campus. So, we’re bringing them into the light with our Tip Jar Library Tours! We can’t wait to share these hidden gems where you’ll find study spaces, WiFi, printers, scanners, helpful librarians, millions of resources at your fingertips, and of course, comfortable seats to do work and nap.

While each library has it’s own unique characteristics, just like the collections and materials that it holds, there are still many similarities across our libraries to make your library touring consistent and pleasant. Check out the videos below of four University of Texas’s Science Libraries. We’ll be releasing more library tours in February!

Looking for an electrical outlet in PCL? Don’t forget about the powered study tables!

Update: Just in time for PCL 24/5 in March 2013 – 24 new outlets, 30 new tables, and 60 new seats were added to the 5th floor!

PCL 5th floor

We know it’s tough to find the perfect space for studying in PCL this time of the year and we want to make certain you know that some of the tables in the building provide additional electrical outlets.

The 51 powered study tables that were installed recently added 612 new outlets to PCL this year alone!

Look for powered study tables like the one below in these places:

2nd/Entry level floor

  • Periodicals Room
  • UFCU Student Learning Commons
  • Reference Room
  • Study Carrels in PCL Lobby

4th floor

6th floor

Powered Study Tables on the 6th Floor of PCL

We’ve also installed new outlets throughout the building as part of other renovation projects and will continue to do so.  Don’t forget there are also 350 outlets on the 5th floor too. Total, you’ll find over 1500 accessible outlets located near study furniture in PCL.

We’re continuously working to improve the spaces in PCL for your work.  Right now, we’re looking at potential renovations to the 5th floor.  Do you have ideas for improving those spaces?  Share your ideas with us through this survey.  You can also stop by the 5th floor and contribute your ideas or enjoy reading the ideas contributed by others!

New Knowledge Imaging Center scanners in PCL Periodicals Room

We’re happy to announce the installation of the first of two Knowledge Imaging Center (KIC) Scanner stations in the PCL Periodical Room.  These scanners allows you to quickly and easily scan an item and then either save the file to a USB/Flash drive or email the file to yourself or others.

Read the information from the scanner’s How Do I? entry below.  Expect to see more of these stations rolled out in PCL and the branches in the coming months!

What is a KIC Scanner?

A KIC Scanner is a walkup unit for scanning color and/or black and white material. The KIC Scanner can scan material up to 24” x 17”.

How do I use a KIC Scanner?

Scanning instructions are located alongside each KIC Scanning station. Also, follow the prompts on the touch panel.

How do I save scanned material?

You can save scanned material onto a USB drive (flash drive or memory stick). USB drives are for sale in the Library Copier Services office (PCL 1.102).

After logging in to the attached workstation, UT students, staff, and faculty can send the scanned images (all or selected) out via email.

KIC Scanners are NOT directly connected to any printers at this point in time.

Where are the KIC Scanners located?

Two KIC Scanners are located in PCL 2.400 (the PCL Periodicals Room) at the back of the room just past the photocopiers
